I'm sure Robert Carlyle will be a good Hitler. I think a better choice for the role, though, may have been Tilda Swinton. I'm not sure why, but I know the critics would have loved it.
Is it me, or does Carlyle not look more like Swinton-playing-Hitler here than he does Hitler, or even Carlyle-playing-Hitler, for that matter?
Is this all just in my head?
Posted by ÿ at May 14, 2003 01:14 PMJeeze that's precisely what I thought when I had Robert Carlyle staring over my Grape Nuts at me this morning from the front of the Globe Review section. (Not to the same evaluative ontological extent- I just thought 'hey he looks like Tilda Swinton with a little moustache") Were you sniping at Tilda with that "critics would have loved it"-sass? I'd almost go so far as to say that I won't stand for it but I suppose it _is_ your weblog. Still though. And I don't even know if you're right; most critics would probably shit and piss all over that Derek Jarman stuff she was in. D'jyer know he discovered her at Cambridge, where she was studying, and that she's an aristocrat? Tilda Swinton is out of control. She's really attractive in that totally improbable way. Having a crush on Tilda Swinton is sort of like having a crush on castration anxiety.

Posted by: TheDiscourse on May 14, 2003 05:54 PM .So, we had the same experience with the Globe photo. I wanted to find that exact picture, but couldn't on the Globe and Mail website. Yet I found another three or four Carlyle-as-Hitler pics, all of which looked Swintonesque - so I think we're on to something.
I was Swinton-sniping, a bit. I find once someone's thought sophisticated, no one will say otherwise unless they Hugh-Grant-it-up. So I take the burden upon myself.

Very funny sir.
