My I.Q.

I asked the guy who found this on-line IQ test what he got, and he said "129". This made me swell with pride, because he's the type of person I think of as having a high IQ - and I got 130.

When I told him this, he said, "oh, wait-- maybe I got 131, now that I think about it, because I took another one, an easier one, and I think I'm mixing up the scores."

I was inexplicably deflated by this... until I became suspicious.

Nevertheless, I would have gotten 131 had I honed my math skills to the point where I was capable of recognizing a square root. Perhaps this little hint will help you break the 130 level, too. Or perhaps you are the type of person who isn't inclined to have your IQ tested. Maybe you just don't give a poo.

If that's the case, good on you. If it isn't, I think you should go for it: it's easy, and flattering, and this is coming from a guy who never tested well. It called me "a curator of truth". It called the guy who found the test an "insightful linguist". It called another of my friends a "visionary philosopher".

Oooooh - but I wanted to be the 'visionary philosopher'!

138. And a "visionary philosopher" to boot. Heh.

Of course, I only got 126 on the 12-minute IQ test here, but I was assured that that's still in the top 5%.

Standardized testing is all a bunch of crap, anyway. That is, unless it calls me a visionary philosopher...

Well, you've already received your daily compliment then, Marijke.

I'd try the 12 minute one, but if you dropped from 138 to 126 I don't even want to know what would happen to my (tenuous at best) 130 status...

Posted by: ÿ on January 13, 2003 03:48 PM .

Funny thing, I actually did better on the 12-minute test than on the first one. It seems almost impossible - how could one IQ test give me one score, and another another?

And about that first one, is it not just a bizarre front for a sleazy dating company? Was I the only one offered a list of 'compatible' monsters to date at the end of the test?

i, too, got a list of monsters at the end of the test. they were all from tucson, az. someone should really notify the arizona tourism board that emode.com is sabotaging their campaign...
as for the 12-minute, it struck me as more math-problem heavy. and i suck at math, so maybe that's why i did worse?

(hey ÿ, the high iq society says that anything over 116 is "significantly above average" and anything over 125 makes you "Gifted". So shake off that sarcasm and step on into the smartie camp there, killer.)

The test was intriguing but the true test was not the answers to the questions on the exam. The true test was how you learned the meaning of Philosopher Visionary after seeing that your exam revealed you to be a Philosopher Visionary. The true sign of genius is that you chose to use Google over Visa.

The purpose of the emode test is to extract something of value from the reader. After engaging the intellect and then buttering up the ego emode promises to show the secret of the reader’s life for a small nominal fee. This is a classic selling technique heavily used by conmen.

Posted by: Bill on April 4, 2003 03:22 PM .

I must agree, you see with Y, or Z? As the testing placed me at one-hundred-thirty-three.

Posted by: nathan on April 9, 2003 06:08 AM .

I found the test quite interesting. It's basically a shorter version of the kinds of tests which we all remember taking in grammar school. I believe I scored a 126, which is relatively consistent with my previous scores during my school days. It's best not to take the whole thing too seriously. A high score cannot predict success but gives it will give you a general idea of the way your mind works.

Is that a fair assessement??

the 12 minute test bases your score on accuracy, speed, and age. I guess they presume the older you are the more opportunity you have had for education or collection of general knowledge and insight. I got a 156 on the 12 minute one and a 140 on the emode test.

I scored 149 and my wife 154 on the Emode test. Having also taken the standard Stanford-Binet adult IQ test(the real deal!), I scored just 14 points difference. IQ test validity is still a highly debated topic in the realm of psychology. IQ is a self-indulgent ego trip that lacks purpose, but so is dropping acid. If everyone likes brain building tests check out the book "Building Mental Muscle". If I recall correctly the median score for an IQ test is 100 those between 80-90 are considered learning disabled. Trying to remember psych 140.lol

Posted by: cmonkey on August 13, 2003 12:36 AM .

I've come here, by googling "visionary philosopher," after scoring 140 on emode. I'm feeling rather smart, although I'm a bit perturbed to discover that I'm not quite the genius that I hoped. Only "highly gifted - others think you're a genius."

Drat.

If it's true that googling "visionary philosopher" instead of visa-ing emode adds another 20 pts, then I suppose I should feel better. But, at least I can throw my one percentile rareness around to intimidate those of a lower order. I'm constantly surrounded by idiots, you see.

Anyway, I just wanted to say, since other VPs will find their way here through google, that there is this book that I read some time ago called "Emotional Intelligence." Daniel Goleman, the author, basically said the true indicator of success is not the IQ, but the EQ.

When you were a kid, would you have eaten one piece of candy "now" if you could have none "later," or would you have waited to have two "later?"

This, more than your ability to see patterns and anticipate the future, is more indicitive of your real successes. I've found that this is true, because it is precisely this problem that I've had to overcome in my life. Addiction, pride, attention deficits, etc.

Thus, true intelligence is the ability to master your emotions, to veto the animal mind, or, as Paul said to those with an ear to hear, to "crucify the flesh."

But, there I go philosophizing again. If there are any other VPs out there interested, I blog from time to time @ patoka.blogspot.com You may find my visionary rants entertaining, if nothing else. (One of these days I'll add a comments engine.)

Posted by: Horace on September 22, 2003 03:44 PM .

Well well well. I'm not very impressed with any of you. Online tests are not an accurate representation of your IQ, for several reasons but I’ll name but a few.

First, tests like Emode have only a limited number of questions, which means that the test will have a very low sealing, and many people will get the same score. Just look at what you have all be saying about Emode scores, 140, 144…I rest my case on the matter. Second, a lot of these websites are only after one thing…your money, and they’ll give you an easy test that say’s you got 150+ just so you will feel good about your score and buy some pointless report. Third, if the test is not timed, then you will be more able/inclined to cheat.

Tests organised by MENSA are strictly supervised, and under a set time limit, meaning that a good score from the organisation is far more valuable than Emode or most other establishments. Also, there is a test that MENSA give you called Culture Fair, which does not assume you have had any formal education. In addition to this, MENSA tests have a very large number of questions, vastly reducing the chances of a sealing effect.

I have seen very little in the way of people saying their score was from a certified organisation like MENSA or the like, which I think gives no credibility otherwise.

I you really want to impress myself and others at MENSA, go for the real thing and take the MENSA test. You only need to be in the top 2% of the population, which to some is not so difficult.

It's amazing how many people get pumped up by an 'I.Q.' test that is merely intended for entertainment purposes (not to mention the desire of emode to make that almighty greenback). Additionally, I find it amusing that these individuals find it necessary to 'try' to impress the rest of their so called genius' by inflating their scores to include numbers that are off the charts. It behooves me to say that I appreciate these attempts at razzle dazzle, as it is entertaining to read their drivel, yet I often wonder if they actually believe that they are as gifted as they think. Contrary to popular belief though, it is not necessary to be a good at spelling, or math or any number of other academic lineages to be a genius. By the same token, being good at anyone thing does not a genius make either. It's entirely feasible, that someone that scored poorly on the 'test', might be a master pianist, or a speed reader etc. So, in conclusion, if you were priviledged enough to have access to a computer, and had the time to take the test without bullets flying, or bombs dropping around you, or any other number of natural disasters going on in the world to impede your progress, you should count yourself lucky. So, have fun, I'm sure I'll get a kick out of how someone attacks my little paragraph here...

Anyone that watched Sesame street for one episode can get the 130 I've got with emode. Where are the real tests at?...and who cares? We are only as smart as we prove to ourselves by achievements...we don't need no stupid comparisons with losers that feel smart...dudes...you need to get out more...you clearly grew up in a society that still measures manhood by the size of their penises...you are too busy measuring in the bathroom when everyone else (that could have smaller penises than you) are out there using them hahaha.

Give Mr. Orthographically Challenged Discourse a break. I am dyslexic and have to be super conscious with transposing numbers and letters, and, I know that I have a terrible time with grammar, but, that doesn’t mean I am not a smarty pants. The highest score you can get now on Emode is 144. I know this to be true because I recently got 144 on the actual E-mode test i.e. every single question correct – okay, I was an ego satisfying sucker and paid with visa. Also, I am a card carrying member of Mensa which confirms my score at least at 136 (the minimum score, I don’t know my actual score), if I recall correctly, (which only means if you take 49 random people and myself, I am probably the one with the highest IQ - 98 percentile).

When I was a child people would ask me what I wanted to do when I grew up? I’d tell them I wanted to be a Philosopher King or if there weren’t any positions open the Anti-Christ. Looks like there’s going to be some competition for the King job! It think the Anti-Christ is already taken.

When I was 9 years of age, I was given an official culture-fair IQ test by a psychologist. Well thought I did badly but my IQ turned out to be - 167 ... far into the genius range. I'm currently a member of mensa, and although I scored as high as 184 on the Mega Test by Dr Ron Hoeflin, 167 is still by far the most accurate one, well that's what I think. I scored the maximum of 144 on the emode test. Kind of weird to be degraded from the profoundly gifted range into the meer gifted range.

Posted by: Fear Factor on November 24, 2003 05:03 AM .

I used to wonder what my IQ is because I had developmental problems, but lately I have been wondering whether the whole concept of IQ is outdated. I am bored right now so I guess I'll give you some statistics:

My scores were 131 on the emode test and ~140 (137, i think) on the 12-minute international high iq society test. My tested IQ is 110, but that score might be lower than it should be because I took the test when I was 9 years old and I had abnormally high levels of ammonia in my blood as a youth or something (it's supposed to retard your cognitive development). My timed SAT score was 1340 and my untimed was 1350 but i have a feeling i could have done a lot better (my brother got a 1320 and then a 1540. If you combine my highest math and verbal scores, it comes to 1410). I took the Mensa Home Test and I got a 137, but I took 30 seconds longer than I should have on one section because i thought I got distracted. If I had missed all the questions i answered in those 30 seconds, it would have been 133.

Haha! With an IQ of 110, I might be your stereotypical serial killer, yay!

Posted by: technical term=serial killer on December 6, 2003 06:25 PM .

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I am 19 years old.

First and last entry:
There was a question on the emode test:

Q: True knowledge exists in knowing that you know_________.
1. Everything
2. Nothing
3. The truth
4. The weather
5. The meaning of life

It appears that most of you answered #1.

Would be interesting to see if any of you could submit a comment without using " I "?

I am so smart. I took this test. I got 136. I am smarter than everyone else who writes here. I hope you all see that I am because I am. I am only 18!

Posted by: ÿ on December 9, 2003 04:19 PM .

Fellow VMs, a 136 here.

I found this page exactly as everyone else did: by doing the test in the first place; scoring highly; then wanting to find out what my 136 meant. Like the rest of you I queried Google rather than paying to buy the report — so we are all at least that smart.

Selection bias is probably a big factor in explaining the high scores on this site. We all chose to take the test — my wife would not, because even though she is a great creative thinker, she knows she would not score well on this type of test, which really only measures certain aspects of intelligence. And we all chose to search out ourselves a reasonable explanation of what we “achieved.” So the range of 120-136 above should not be dismissed outright.

The lowest score on this site so far seems to be a 118 and this came from someone overtly claiming to be female with an email address posted in the comment — that could be telling about the low end. Were some of those questions ridiculously easy, or is it true that we are all pretty smart.

I bet that the test is reasonably accurate. I scored in 98th percentile SAT and GMAT, and up there on similar tests going way back. There is definitely some profiteering going on by Emode, given the fact that the test was a pop-up screen and ultimately they want to sell you something. But that does not mean the test is dishonest. Emode is likely appealing precisely to people like us that are smart to make a few bucks stroking our egos.

If someone is willing to fork up the money for fun, please buy the report and share with the rest of the VMs. It would be great fodder for a next round of comments.

For what it is worth, I relate to the VM title and to the essence of comments above about traits of a VM. I am a professional economist, work with lots of numbers, have an excellent sense of direction. I have a knack for phone numbers. I guess this confirms I am a geek.

Taking the test was definitely worthwhile if only for the trip around the net that it has set off.

Besides the majority of people posting messages on this page suggested by their grammar have IQ’s in the 110-120’s range. I am a member of the international High IQ society and Mensa also include I am 2 years younger than majority of my grade and already take advanced calculus.

You morons! look in which percentile 144 is on you need to stop claiming your IQ is 190 because Albert Einstein didn't have an IQ that. Grow up and get a life you morons the Emode IQ test was made by morons who bought there PhD on line. If you have an IQ of 144 you qualify for the Mensa Society. So what some of you are saying is if you score 144 on an IQ test you could lose 34 points on an IQ test ! Try looking up things on psychology !

This thread, I've realized, is all about how both bravado and enraged indignation attack the brain's capacity for syntax and grammar. Also, I would gather that IQbris is the sort of thing that comes back to bite you in the arse.

Posted by: TheDiscourse on January 28, 2004 08:43 AM .

"IQbris" is now my new favourite term.
It has replaced "Christ on a trike" (also a Discoursism).

Discourse, will you write a slang dictionary for me?

Hey brian, your joke is only funny if you're under 15 and are a visionary philosopher.

who like it test? no one take iq

Posted by: marchi on March 4, 2004 09:04 PM .

Dou you guys really believe these tests? Just THINK: all of you scored very high above average... how come 99 % of the posters here have the IQ of 1% of the population??? I think the REAL iq test is: did you give these online testing companies your real email address? Or paid them good money?

Posted by: Skeptic on March 10, 2004 05:29 PM .

Howdy fellow VMs. I scored a 135 on Emode and 126 on the 12 min test on High IQ society. I did a little research appears that emode was right about one thing. Einstein did have a way of thinking that could qualify for "visual mathematician", though not actually called as such. He never bothered learning formulas because he could just visualize everything in his head, e.g. the pythagorean theorem. In fact, he would have a hard time tutoring high school students with their cal homework, because he had to learn all the formulas. Just though I would share that with you guys.

Posted by: kskywr on March 12, 2004 02:34 PM .

Please, people, follow in kskywr's footsteps and share stories about Einstein; talk about your own personal genius; talk about what you had for breakfast; talk about fucking anything other than emode or how dumb people in this thread seem to be.

Thanks,
Your Loving Administrator

I had 118, and I was watching TV, while I was writting my IQ test, and gousiping with a friend on the phone, and by the way I don`t speak english very well, so what do you think?, should be happy or not with my mark...

Posted by: on March 17, 2004 12:01 AM .

I just have one question,.. I scored a 133 on the emode test,.. but I was wondering how would one go about getting a "real" test? Not tryin to sound stupid,... sorry if I am. I just never have taken an iq test before,... and was curious now to take a "real" one. Any ideas?

Posted by: wykked on March 21, 2004 04:50 PM .

when i lived in america i did an I.Q. test and got 177. I was told I was above average in all areas and the highest they had ever seen in spatial reasoning and relationships. I have two brothers as smart as me also. my dad got 171 and mum could rotate 3D objects in her head. women aren't supposed to be able to do that

Posted by: Jake on March 22, 2004 06:32 PM .

Who gives a shit?

Posted by: TheDiscourse on March 22, 2004 07:48 PM .

I took the emode test while I was watching Major Dad and snorting ecstasy and scored 144. Is that considered good?

Makes you a visionary philosopher, Rasputin.

I got 136, phoned my wife at home to brag about my smarts but couldn't find the handheld that usually sits by my computer....then I it dawned on me, I wasn't at home...

Posted by: James on April 5, 2004 03:20 AM .

hey folks, yup i took the emode brain teaser an got a cool 138. I think this test is really foolish, cause if i was really this smart then i would have finish college by now. But hey cant help but felt good when i saw the result. Now im going to brag and brag on how smart i am to my dumb friends. haha

Posted by: on April 19, 2004 12:16 AM .

I took an i.q. test and scored 115, english is my second language. Has anyone taken the test in a language other than their mother tongue , say French and what conclusion have you arrived at ?

Posted by: on April 26, 2004 01:38 AM .

Whatever makes you guys sleep better at night! (re: my IQ is...)
I would be more impressed with how many tricks your pets can do while stoned dude.

YO DUDE. I THINK ITS GREAT!!!

Posted by: BOB on May 12, 2004 01:21 PM .

100 is the average score for average people.
im just 16 and scored 134 but my young age doesn't mean my score is better than a 40 year old getting 134. its opposite. The older you are the harder it is to have a high IQ. Peoples IQ potential peaks at around 14-18.
Older people score better than younger on genral knowledge tests, not IQ.
Just thought id clear those things up.

Posted by: dan on May 22, 2004 05:49 PM .

p.s, i took a proper IQ test, not one of these internet ones designed to lie so they can scam people out of their money

Posted by: dan on May 22, 2004 05:51 PM .

Y'all are so funny! HA HA! I can't believe all the stuff I just read! I took a test from tickle.com and I knew while I was taking it that it was an emotional gig--something I wanted to do to vindicate myself, make me feel smart, because I know I'm smart! BUT how many of you are like me and waste all kinds of time??? You know you can be kicking ass at whatever you want, but for some reason you're not! I went to the GIGA Society's site which requires a minimum IQ score of 197 to join and I read about all SIX members. I'm sorry, but for being so freaking intelligent not only did that website do a poor job of presenting them as incredible people, but what it [the site] and those people had to say about thier lives wasn't any E = MC SQUARED TYPE NUCLEAR BOMB BOOM BOOM WOW THAT WAS SUPER DUPER STUFF!!! They're just regular dudes...whatever.

Posted by: Mike on May 27, 2004 01:41 AM .

Everyone here just seems to have something to prove.....Who cares what you scored. High or low we are all the same. Why be rude?

I took the Tickle test last night and got a 129. They said I was an insightful linguist.(WhatevA) The test still doesn't help my laziness, maybe its a lack of intake.

I left my pet cat alone in the computer room and when I came back I saw he got an IQ of 136, can people tell me if that's good for a cat? I'm not sure I mean, I tell him not to touch the furniture but he does anyways....

I'm kinda suspicious as to the accuracy of this test...

Posted by: Tripod on July 4, 2004 02:33 AM .

SOO,FUNNY. I THINK THAT IS GOOD FOR A CAT!
